What is insurance fraud?
Insurance fraud is the act of exaggerating, falsifying or purposely misstating facts of an accident to receive financial compensation from an insurance company. Inflated medical bills, exaggerated injuries, arson and staged accidents are all forms of insurance fraud, and all are prosecutable under the law.
How does it affect me?
According to the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB), Insurance industry studies indicate more than 10% of property and casualty claims are fraudulent. Fraud is the second most costly white-collar crime in America behind tax evasion. Add it all up and insurance fraud costs Americans billions of dollars each year. Not only does fraud cause higher insurance rates, but it also raises our taxes and inflates prices for consumer goods.
What are we doing to reduce fraud?
Our company has a Special Investigations Unit (SIU) that oversees all potential acts of fraud against our business nationwide and works with authorities to ensure individuals involved in fraud are prosecuted to the full extent of the law. The majority of our SIU staff have prior law enforcement backgrounds, understand insurance and fraud schemes. Our SIU works directly with the National Insurance Crime Bureau and local authorities to stay informed of the latest insurance fraud trends.
